What Is HAL-RAR?
HAL RAR is one of the most effective treatments of symptoms such as itching, bleeding and pain.
The HAL-RAR Doppler guided hemorrhoid procedures are appropriate for patients with internal diseased hemorrhoids grade II-IV. These have been developed to provide relief from bleeding, itching and prolapsed tissue. Compared to most surgical procedures for hemorrhoids, the HAL / RAR procedures are intended to provide the patient with less pain and faster recovery. The combined procedures (not including preparation of the patient) take approximately 45 minutes. No cutting or stapling is required.
For the HAL procedure, the surgeon will first use a Doppler to find the sub-arteries that “feed” the hemorrhoid veins. Once one is located, it is constricted by simply tying a suture around it. The RAR (Rectal Anal Repair) is performed if the hemorrhoid disease has caused the tissue to prolapse (bulge out). For the RAR procedure, the surgeon pulls the prolapsed tissue back in place by using a suture to first gather the tissue and then tie it up.
Both procedures are conducted above the patient’s dentate line, which is the area on the anus where the nerves begin. As long as the work is done above the dentate line, the resulting pain is minimal. Patient’s commonly describe the feeling after the procedure similar to the sensation of pushing when one is trying to defecate.
The procedure is very safe, with minimal post-surgical complications. As with all procedures involving the rectum, urinary retention can occur (particularly in male patients.
Please ask your doctor to determine if the HAL RAR procedure is the optimal choice for you, and find out more about the post-surgery experiences of his or her patients.
